Butan existed in South Africa long before hip-hop attire was the “in thing.” But, unlike other hip-hop brands, it speaks to all that is proudly African, not just rap music and the youth.

Julian Kubel, the company’s creator, was still a student when he printed his first T-shirt, but since then this fun t-shirt project has since grown into something far more complicated and unique. In 2006, the brand was made commercially available and since then Kubel claims that local celebrities, as well as some worldwide celebrities, have been spotted wearing his pieces. Julian describes Butan as streetwear silhouettes with bold conceptual designs, lots of colours and patterns and a strong overall African design aesthetic.
