Morapedi Floyd Manotoana studied fashion design at the South Western Gauteng College in Soweto after learning to sew from his first designer label Smarteez.
In 2013, he launched his own line, Floyd Avenue, an androgynous-inspired high-fashion streetwear label, which won the South African Fashion Week Scouting Menswear Competition in 2016.
His work, as well as his previous collaborations, allowed his work to be discovered by New York-based designer Jenny Lai and her photography colleague Chris Saunder. His creative method can be described as “stealth improvisation,” in which he pays spontaneous—and then precise—attention to detail.
