Lukhanyo Mdingi was born in East London, South Africa. He was a finalist in the Elle Rising Star Design Award for his innovative designs after graduating from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Mdingi has been fascinated by the beauty and vigour of life in South African rural towns since he was 16 years old. His aesthetic is based on a combination of disciplined order and organic form, and his textiles are used in an avant-garde way and can be described as artisanal casual wear.
He is also known for his unique silhouettes that combine clashing materials and textures. Mdingi is one of South Africa’s most promising fashion stars, with five collections under his belt and a joint winning prize of the 2021 LVMH Karl Lagerfeld Prize.
