Mikhayla Farouk, a University of Johannesburg fashion design alumni, created the menswear line Maklele, after completing her B Tech degree in 2018.
The label focuses on gender-fluid design, which not only lowers resource-intensive processes but also the need for excessive variation.
Her brand is also highly concerned with sustainable garment manufacture and believes that it should express the freedom to wear whatever you choose, regardless of style or cultural constraints.
Maklele was a finalist in the SA Fashion Week 2020 Scouting Menswear Competition. The brand’s sustainability is at the forefront, with pieces that are adaptable aiming to reduce the need for superfluous apparel.
